City Executives

The Landscape

The executive committee of a municipality is where policy is discussed and drafted, and chains of command are established. This is important because a Muni Continuity plan is not effective unless you get maximum participation from all constituents - a chain of command provides the structure necessary to put everyone on the same page, so all municipal employees know their roles in case of a disruptive event. It is important for the executive committee to establish a well thought-out methodology for all municipal employees to buy into. Once this is done, it’s just a matter of time before the Muni Continuity initiative filters down to all levels.

The Benefit

  • Muni Continuity provides templates that recognize the importance of not only internal municipal structures, but also how to involve other authorities, and how responsibilities should be passed to a higher authority should a disruption become unmanageable
  • Municipal employees gain a greater awareness of the roles they must play in an emergency
  • Muni Continuity ensures that a much more enterprise-wide approach to risk, preparedness and continuity is taken, as opposed to initiatives simply focused on public safety
  • The silo mentality is broken, as all departments have a much better idea of other's role in plan; if executed correctly, the municipality will have put sturdy measures in place to better protect people, assets and systems
